Zesty, clean, bright, and happy — these are all the ways we describe the scent of lemon. From food and drinks with fresh, acidic flavors, to cleaning products with antiseptic and bacteria-fighting properties, lemon is a scent hero. Add lemon to almost anything and you’ll find yourself claiming that it’s good for you, cheery, safe, and uplifting.
I happen to be a big fan of lemon when it comes to most products. But lemon perfume?
Many years ago, I discovered a signature scent: Acqua Di Parma. This clean citrus scent was neither feminine nor masculine — it was licorice-y and crisp. It had other citrus ingredients, including bergamot and orange, but the Sicilian lemon really shined through.
As you may know, I’m an advocate of non-toxic fragrances. Today you’d never find a toxic perfume on my shelf. So let me share my new lemon go to perfumes.
Can Lemon Perfume Help Boost My Mood?
If you search online for all things “lemon” and “scent” — you’ll see that it’s a favored ingredient in most lighter perfumes, eau de toilette, and scents associated with summer. What you won’t find is why lemon is an incredible mood enhancer and how to use it to boost your mood and your health.
As a top note, your nose will be delighted. The truth is, lemon is so much more than a note, it is a1:
- It can help you with concentration and stress
A lemon essential oil should be your go-to scent to get your work done, keep you focused, productive, and uplifted.
The citrus family is a staple of the perfume industry. From oranges to bergamot, grapefruit to lime — lemon is a bright star. We all recognize the fresh, light scent that takes us back to memories of sunny days and clean rooms. The lemon scent comes from the skin of fresh fruits from the Citrus Limonum tree.
If you have ever been up close to a lemon tree, you will see it’s thorny with small fragrant fruit. Photogenic and instagramable, this yellow fruit is one of the world’s healthiest foods thanks to its sour juice — rich in citric acid.
In perfume, the juice and the pulp of the lemon aren’t used — only the precious lemon oil extracted from the skin is used. You’ll find this oil is used not only in perfume, but also in the food industry, medicine, and (of course) aromatherapy.
3 Therapeutic Benefits of Lemon Essential Oil
Aromatherapy provides a new way to explore and use scent. In this application, essential oil synergies or single notes are used to provide specific therapeutic benefits. Adding lemon to your alcohol-based perfume is nice. But it’s not going to impact your health and well-being, like adding lemon essential oil to your aroma perfume will.
By adding lemon essential oil to your routine, you’ve now added a unique functional ingredient that can become your new best friend in your healing arsenal.
Explore these 3 therapeutic benefits of lemon essential oil:
1. Relief From Your Anxiety
Lemon essential oil is known to be a natural stress reliever. A lemon formulation can stimulate serotonin and dopamine production, which contributes to decreased anxiety.
2. Enhance Your Mood
Research indicates that lemon essential oil acts as a mood enhancer and inhaling the aroma of lemon essential oil promotes relaxation.²
3. Renew Your Self Love and Positivity
New research shows that the scent of lemon helps people feel better about their body image. In a new study from Sussex Computer-Human Interaction (SCHI) Lab based in the United Kingdom, people felt thinner and lighter when they smelled lemon.³
The research states: "Our brain holds several mental models of one's own body appearance which are necessary for successful interactions with the environment. These body perceptions are continuously updated in response to sensory inputs received from outside and inside the body. Our study shows how the sense of smell can influence the image we have in our mind of our body and the feelings and emotions towards it.”
What Chakra Is Lemon Essential Oil Used For?
The biggest challenge in using lemon as a note in perfume is how to mix it with other scents. With alcohol-based perfume, lemons and flowers are a perfect marriage. This is because lemon mixes well with other citruses as well as aromatic herbs like lavender. Compositions like these contain balsamic notes, floral notes, and herbal notes.
In aromatherapy, the challenge is that sometimes everything starts to smell like a cleaning product. But who wants that?
At ADORAtherapy, we’ve risen to the challenge! We've created several blends with lemon that I’m very proud of. They not only smell great but can be naturally healing.
Our lemon blends focus on the Solar Plexus Chakra, an area we often need to boost to shift to being more optimistic. It’s located above the navel and below the base of the breastbone — near the physical center of our bodies. Its color is yellow (like a lemon) and the energy spins a little faster than the first and second Chakras. It’s associated with the element of fire.
When in balance, this Chakra impacts our personal power, ego identity, self-assurance, respect for self, and others. A balanced Solar Plexus Chakra allows appropriate boundaries in our lives and the willpower to adhere to them.
If you are pursuing personal growth and shifting your belief system to open yourself to a higher level of awareness — then this is the chakra you should focus on. The Solar Plexus Chakra is the place from which we have our “gut feelings.” And for those of us who are entrepreneurs, risk-takers, and go-getters: this is the seat of our power when making decisions.
I think of it as the location of my creative expression and an indication of my level of awareness. When I have a balanced Solar Plexus Chakra, people are drawn to me, and my integrity and strength shine through.

A pure lemon essential oil should never be applied directly to the skin or used in larger amounts than recommended (the oil is absorbed through the skin and using too much can be harmful). The most common side effect is an increase in photosensitivity.
Citrus-oil-treated skin may become red and irritated when exposed to the sun. You should never ingest lemon oil directly. If you wish to add lemon flavor to your cooking you can use a lemon extract approved for this use.
