Its what inside the counts: Our interview with the Original Jojoba Company.

Its what inside the counts: Our interview with the Original Jojoba Company.

Tell us more about The Original Jojoba Company and its values and mission?

Since 1994 it has been the company’s mission to provide the world with the purest, highest quality jojoba extract on the market and to offer it at fair prices, so all of us can enjoy its benefits, whether for personal or professional use. We pride ourselves on educating the market as to what jojoba really is, what the best practices are for producing it and how to use it to better our lives. We are so grateful to be able to offer the world a product that is naturally simple, effective and safe for the whole family.

What is the plant like and how do you produce the jojoba?

Jojoba is a desert shrub, native to the Sonoran Desert, in Arizona. In order to ensure reliable climate for and consistent quality of our crops, we grow our jojoba in Israel. As of 2019, we have been proudly Farmer-Owned by a cooperative of growers we have worked with there for many years.

When it is time for jojoba to be harvested, the seeds fall from the shrub which we gather through a netting process that is different from the vacuum system most other farms employ, making it much better for the famers health, as there are not clouds of dust to contend with. This method also ensures only the current harvest is gathered, no mix of old and new seed from the ground.

We are the only producers in the world of First Press quality jojoba extract. This means we do a light pressing of our seeds to extract only the best quality jojoba for your skin, not the highest quantity from the seed with hard or multiple pressings. Our jojoba is unrefined. We take the extract, filter it for any seed casing debris, pass it through UV light pasteurization and bottle it. You are receiving a very unfussed with natural ingredient for your skin!

What are the benefits of jojoba oil and why should formulators consider this over other carriers?

First and foremost is because pure jojoba is not actually an oil! Many do not realize that when jojoba is in its pure, unrefined form, it is a liquid wax ester – unique to oils in that it does not contain the triglycerides oils do that cause them to go rancid over time.

For formulators, this makes your jojoba totally shelf stable. Jojoba can even elongate the life of some perishable ingredients blended with it. And for their consumers? Where do we begin? Pure jojoba is non-allergenic (even to those with nut allergies, as jojoba is a seed). It is non-comedogenic, so it will not clog pores and is amazingly compatible with all skin types. It is the closest plant ingredient to the make up of the sebum in our sebaceous glands. This means it readily absorbs into the skin instead of sitting on top, bringing deeper moisture, nourishment and elasticity. A very small amount is needed to effectively soften and condition the skin.

Pure jojoba is an ideal carrier for aromatherapy and herbal infusions as its fixative qualities hold the added scents very well and it is able to deliver their beneficial properties more deeply to the skin.

What are some other products made with Jojoba?

While jojoba is complete and lovely to use on its own – there are, of course, other wonderful natural ingredients in our world that bring unique qualities to the table. We have so many customers who create truly beautiful products that include jojoba as a base or as a supporting ingredient. Aromatherapeutic uses, of course. But also soaps, lotions, salves, hair care, beard care, pet products, skincare for babies. Jojoba is used widely in the massage therapy world and is so safe it is sought after by oncology professionals. It can even be used as a conditioner for wood (like a kitchen cutting board) and metal (to prevent oxidization/rust on garden tools).

What's a day in the life at The Original Jojoba Company?

Although we do business worldwide, we are a small company located in Washington, Maine. We have 8 employees who range in working in filling and packing, customer service, social media, strategic growth, etc. We all work together to ensure a quality experience for our customers.

While purity is our priority, right alongside that topmost value is the importance of our relationships with our customers. If you call us, you will talk to a real person – and one happy to do so! We have so many customers who have been with us for many, many years and since jojoba lasts such a long time, we may only hear from them once a year – but it still feels like an ongoing connection, which we love.

Our current day to day includes filling hundreds of our 1oz bottles for our Holiday Gift Packs, preparing blog posts to educate our readers on all manner of jojoba uses, reaching out to companies who have been effected by the Covid-19 pandemic and reconnecting with their needs as they attempt to open back up for business, creating more small batches of our new HobaCare products and of course, answering emails, processing orders and speaking with anyone who calls us! We couldn’t be more thankful to still be able to run our business and provide the world with jojoba, in spite of all the major challenges of 2020.
