When Asheville, North Carolina, became my new home after thirty years in New York City and New Jersey, I wad thrilled to have found a place to live what was so dog crazy.  Asheville is not just a dreamy destination for humans, but it's a paradise for the pooches too!

Over the years, many friends have visited and brought their pets along with them. We always had our favorite things to do with all of the pets and humans. We figured let's share our short list so that if you're planning a trip with your furry friend to this scenic city nestled among the Blue Ridge Mountains, you're in for a a good time. Asheville offers a pet-friendly atmosphere, a myriad of fun activities, and a wholesome experience for both you and your pet.

Asheville goes beyond mere pet tolerance; it embraces your furry family members with open arms. The city is teeming with pet-friendly hotels, cafes, and stores that welcome pets as enthusiastically as their owners.

Many of the nicest hotels downtown allow pets: The Restoration Hotel, The Kimpton and even the Aloft. Bringing your pet is not cheap but some of the hotels will give back 20% of your pet fee to local shelters like the Asheville Humane Society. Check each hotel website for policies. Check out the Wag app, if your pet needs a walk while you are out and about.

We used to walk our dog Comet, a basset- cattle dog mix around downtown and he seemed prouder than ever when people complimented him and showed him signs of affection. Our favorites include the Battery Park Book Exchange, Hulie Sue's, Carmel's, Modesto and Proper's and the Wedge, which are all located outside at the Grove Arcade.

Looking for some dog play time, and some you time check out the Wag Bar where you can eat and drink and pup can run around off leash.
