Over the years, many friends have visited and brought their pets along with them. We always had our favorite things to do with all of the pets and humans. Asheville recently ranked No. 1 as the U.S. City Most Open to Pet Travel. Now you know: Asheville goes beyond Pet friendly.
Asheville goes beyond mere pet tolerance; it embraces your furry family members with open arms. The city is teeming with pet-friendly hotels, cafes, and stores that welcome pets as enthusiastically as their owners.
Many of the nicest hotels downtown allow pets: The Restoration Hotel, The Kimpton and even the Aloft. Bringing your pet is not cheap but some of the hotels will give back 20% of your pet fee to local shelters like the Asheville Humane Society. Check each hotel website for policies. Check out the Wag app, if your pet needs a walk while you are out and about.
One of the most iconic places in the city is the historic Grove Arcade, where we have our store Adoratherapy. So, you can shop, dine outside on the many terraces, and explore this cultural hub without leaving your pet behind. Why Traveling with a Pet Makes You Feel Safe and Grounded
If like many of us you were spending more time at home during Covid and more time with your pet, then you may not realize that pet travel has steadily increased. Did you know that according to a 2020 survey, 45% of dog owners take their pup with them when they travel for at least two nights?
Traveling can sometimes feel disorienting or stressful. However, bringing your pet along can add a layer of comfort and stability to your journey. Their familiar presence serves as a constant amid the variables of travel, making you feel more at home wherever you are. I for one miss my dog on my bed and in my bed when I am away.
The emotional support our dogs offer is invaluable, turning even the most challenging travel circumstances into slightly more manageable situations. If you're someone who often feels anxious or unsafe while traveling, having your pet by your side can provide a significant sense of security and grounding. A great way to keep your root chakra happy.
What You Can Learn About Your Pet in Social Settings
Traveling with your pet offers a unique opportunity to understand their social behaviors. Observing how they interact on a leash when around other people or animals can give you valuable insights into their temperament, preferences, and triggers. This knowledge can be particularly useful for training and improving your pet's social skills. Asheville's pet-friendly parks and gatherings are great platforms to assess how well your pet interacts in a public setting, and to help them become more socialized.
We used to walk our dog Comet, a basset- cattle dog mix around downtown and he seemed prouder than ever when people complimented him and showed him signs of affection. Every dog is different, and since you probably know what your dog's preferences are, make sure to show them off, or keep them tucked into a pet stroller if that's what works best.
Creating Unforgettable Memories with Your Pet
Asheville's natural beauty and welcoming atmosphere make it the perfect place to create lasting memories with your pet. The city is surrounded by numerous hiking trails where you and your pet can immerse yourselves in nature. Imagine walking through the lush, scenic trails of the Blue Ridge Mountains, your pet excitedly leading the way as you both discover new sights and smells. Check trail rules, especially for off leash, and don't forget we have bears here, so it might be best to keep your pet on a lead at all times.
But it's not just about the adventures; it's also about the quiet moments. Many cafes in Asheville offer pet-friendly terraces where you can enjoy a peaceful meal or sip on a drink while your pet relaxes by your side. These experiences, though simple, become special memories that enrich your life and strengthen the bond between you and your pet. Our favorites include the Battery Park Book Exchange, Hulie Sue's, Carmel's, Modesto and Proper's and the Wedge, which are all located outside at the Grove Arcade.
Looking for some dog play time, and some you time check out the Wag Bar where you can eat and drink and pup can run around off leash.
Asheville has some amazing pet rescue organizations. Our favorite is Brother Wolfe.
