In the ten minutes before 6 a.m., when the sky is still dark and the air still has that bite to it, I am legging-clad and in semi-lotus positon in my living room, perched on the floor. My palms are facing upward and out, resting on my knees, my gaze is relaxed and slightly forward. Until my eyes rest upon the innumerable stacks of DVDs, magazines and recycling that has piled up. But I refuse to think about the mess, or the coffee I am so longing for, or the trash I have to take out in the pouring rain, or the electric bill that has to be paid before noon. I am counting my cycles of breath. I am creating my to-do lists and then dismissing it. I am silently offering compassion to my loved ones and mentors. I am counting my cycles of breath. I am striving for self-awareness. I am in meditation.
